It's one of the most asked questions I get. What should I wear for my photo session?
When it comes to brand photography I've learned that there is no one size fits all. My clients are all at different stages of their lives and businesses. Some have closets stuffed with awesome clothes, others have their everyday uniforms and others have nothing but yoga pants in there. No matter where you fall on the spectrum there are solutions for all budgets and goals.
I've gone through my clients' closets to choose clothing for their sessions. Others have enlisted the help of stylists to help them create outfits from their closets or to help them acquire some new pieces that truly elevate them. Others have borrowed from friends and family.
The critical element to all of these is that what you choose to wear needs to be something that you feel good in and is the right cut for your body type.
Tip #1 - Be comfortable
Have you ever worn an outfit that's too big, too small or just doesn't fit right? You end up fidgeting and you look uncomfortable. Considering we're creating images that are engaging, the last thing you want is to be self-conscious about what you're wearing. Choose an outfit that fits your body and makes you feel great, some people even have a few faves that they've made their signature wardrobe pieces.
It's best to avoid skin-tight cotton Ts and tanks where you can see all the lumps and bumps. Dresses and shirts that have no shape or are very short.
Tip #2 - Would you wear it to meet a client?
Brand photography is about your business so making sure you're wearing what you would wear when you meet a client is important. Also, consider the shoot location. Are you in a setting that calls for heels or construction boots? We are going for a polished look but you want your images to be authentic.
Tip #3 - Be Timeless
When you think about how you're going to use your images and longevity I usually recommend choosing outfits that are timeless versus trendy. The good thing about this is that layers can help add interest and dimension. Keeping the base the same and changing out jackets and sweaters not only creates some versatility quickly it also can cover various seasons and nobody would notice you haven't changed your outfit. The other thing to consider in this is colours. Although pops of your brand colour can be great sticking to neutrals, like black, white, gray, or denim means that your images will last longer than sporting the colour of the season or some crazy pattern.
Tip #4 - Accessories
Accessories are an important way to bring your final look together. Some of them can make great props and help you stand out. Jewelry is a great way to bring out your personality as are hats, sunglasses, belts and handbags.
Tip #5 - Have some variety.
Brand sessions often encompass various looks so have some diversity in your outfits. A dress, pants, jeans, blouses, sweaters, jackets, heels, boots, etc... Choosing outfits you can mix and match can allow for more variety in the images without complete outfit changes but also show off different sides of your personality.
At the end of the day choosing your photo session wardrobe should be fun. After all, we're creating images that are genuinely you. If an outfit is not something you would wear while you work or with a client, then don't wear it. Choose clothing that lets your personality shine through in the most polished version of yourself.
