Did you know that every individual has a personal colour palette that complements their undertone? An undertone can be either warm or cool and is determined by the underlying quality of the skin and the combination of 3 pigments: Haemoglobin, Carotene and Melanin. The level of each pigment will indicate how much coolness or warmth is visible in the skin and the melanin will indicate the value and intensity. The undertone is extremely important when choosing colours that complement the complexion, eyes, teeth and hair.
Some people choose to match their clothes to a company logo or brand associated with social media platforms. This would be fine if you had a black and white logo your undertone was very cool, your eyes were very pure and clear, and your seasonal colour palette was Winter. However; if you are like me, my colour palette is Spring and the colour black against my face would cause an uneven skin tone, dark shadows under the eyes and jaw, a disconnection between head and body, bluish lips and greyish teeth. Probably not a good look for a photo shoot. A better choice for me would be a selection of beautiful bright colours such as bright navy blue, coral and leaf green.
A seasonal colour palette is either Winter (cool and bright), Summer (cool and muted), Spring (warm and bright) or Autumn (warm, dark and muted). Each season has its undertone (warm, cool), Value (light, dark, muted) or Intensity (bright, muted). When determining a client’s best colour palette, all the seasonal dimensions are considered and compared against the complexion, eyes, teeth and hair resulting in a palette that complements and highlights an individual’s features. A client discovers that certain colours can enhance a complexion resulting in a healthy glow with bright, clear eyes and teeth.
Although it is extremely important to know your colour palette before a photo shoot, there are also many other advantages as well.
Save Money
Purchasing a gown, suit, or coat is expensive and if you are selecting colours that do not enhance and complement your undertone and facial features, you are wasting your money. A Spring palette can choose from a selection of camel or warm brown tones or a soft muted summer will always look fresh and fabulous in soft powder blue or silver grey.
Save Time
Why spend hours looking through racks of clothing in a store when you can directly eyeball colours in your palette? We are no longer spending 15 minutes or more standing in our closets wondering what to wear. Once you discover your palette wardrobe, everything works together to complement or contrast palette neutrals such as black, grey or brown paired with the correct basic such as white, soft white, ivory or cream. All accessories will add that extra punch of colour when choosing a warm or cool red shoe/purse. It just all works together!
Look and Feel our Best
When an individual experiences colour responses that resonate with them, facial features are harmonized, and clients witness a glow to their skin and brightness in their teeth and eyes. They see diminished dark shadowing, blemishes, age spots or redness disappear when their WOW colours are draped against their face. Colour can help individuals feel confident and powerful as they look unified and comfortable. The positive energy and vibration that occurs when clients feel their best is confirmed by compliments and acknowledgements from colleagues and friends.
The best way to discover a colour palette is to visit an Image Consultant who is trained in colour analysis. The consultant will take approximately 90 minutes to drape a client using coloured fabrics containing various levels of values, intensities, hues and chromas and begin to analyze and match colours to an individual’s skin tone, natural hair colouring, eyes and teeth. 16 possible palettes will be analyzed during the process and a client will be tested and matched once the undertone is determined. Clients will learn how to recognize colours and tones that complement and harmonize each unique colouring and feature as well as discover jewellery and makeup shades that enhance specific seasonal colouring. For example, an Autumn looks fabulous in foundations with golden hues and earthy eyeshadows and blushes accessorized with yellow or antique gold jewellery. Each client will be shown at least 6 WOW colours that will truly amplify and enhance personal features.
